Not Safe Enough!

Not Safe Enough! The shrill blast of a whistle sounded in the distance. Crane booms were promptly swung aside and men walked off the Pennsylvania Railroad right-of-way. This was routine for the workers who were building an overpass in Philadelphia some years ago. The men paused to watch for the express train which would come thundering by in about a minute. “If that whistleman ever misses his cue it’ll be too bad for us,” said one worker. But when tragedy struck it was not for lack of warning. One day as the familiar whistle sounded and the men walked off the track as usual, two men just stepped over to the adjoining track. It seemed safe enough. They watched a northbound freight move slowly toward them, its whistle screaming – but they were out of the way. It seemed like that train was whistling more than usual, and the roadbed vibrating more than usual. The two men never saw The Washington Express on the track where they were standing. It hurled them into eternity! They thought they were in a safe place; they were dead wrong. The Bible says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Prov. 14:12). Many people realize some dangers and seek to live morally or religiously, trying to find favor in God’s eyes. This is only a step out of one danger into a false security, for our self-righteousness can never save us. There is only one place of safety and that is Christ. Only His death on Calvary’s cross can save us from God’s wrath: “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12) Heed God’s warning now!
