When It Comes To Angels, Real Is Better!

When It Comes To Angels, Real Is Better! I saw some angelic teddy bears for sale in the mall. They had halos and wings and sang Christmas carols when you squeezed their tummies. There was also an angel tree with over a thousand angels on it. While writing this column, an unsolicited fax message came to our Danville office - an investment newsletter named “Angels Stock Watch.” Its heading had two graphics - a praying angel and a halo sitting atop the letter “A”. I could also list songs, TV shows, movies and a host of other angelic images that seem to be everywhere these days, but I don’t want to duplicate what our feature writers have mentioned in their introductions. There are many ersatz angels around these days - even in the stock market! But the number of angels created today in the unreal world of pop culture, pales when compared to those literally existing in the real world of the Bible. When Peter attempted to defend Jesus at His arrest, Matthew 26:53 records that Jesus said, “Do you think I cannot call My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than 12 legions of angels?” That could be as many as 72,000 angels! But there are more. Revelation 5:11 says that in heaven the Lamb’s throne will be encircled by “many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.” And Hebrews 12:22, tells us there will be “an innumerable company of angels” in the heavenly Jerusalem. Is there a bigger number than that? No matter how many phony angels man devises to meet his greed needs, they can’t come close to the vast number of real ones God has to do His will. And guess what? His will includes you. Psalm 91:9-11 says, “If you make the Most High your dwelling ... He will command His angels ... to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not (even) strike your foot against a stone.” What an exciting thought! The Bible doesn’t say anything about angels looking like bears, sitting in trees or watching the stock market. But it does say that angels are guarding those who “love” the Lord, “acknowledge” His name, and “call” upon Him when they are in trouble (Ps. 91:14-16). I hope this includes you. By Larry Ondrejack
