“Listen To Me”
Sometimes we hear exasperated mothers tell their children, “Listen!” In the Bible, “listen” is used in various situations by different individuals. We also see in His Word that God tells people to listen to Him. Consider what is recorded in a few verses in Isaiah:
- “Listen to Me, O house of Jacob … who have been upheld by Me from birth” (46:3 NKJV).
- “Listen to Me, you stubborn-hearted, who are far from righteousness” (v.12).
- “Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, My called” (48:12).
- “Listen … to Me, and take heed, you peoples from afar!” (49:1).
- “Listen to Me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek the Lord” (51:1).
- “Listen to Me, My people; and give ear to Me” (v.4)
- “Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, you people in whose heart is My law” (v.7).
- “Listen carefully to Me … and let your soul delight itself in abundance” (55:2).
One thing to notice in these verses is that God’s appeal, here through the Lord, goes out to everyone: Jew and Gentile, men and women, believer and unbeliever, spiritually young and spiritually mature. Another point is that great blessing, beyond what we can measure, results from listening to Him.
It is likely that many times we simply hear words rather than really listening to them. It is important not only to have words enter our ears but also to ponder them in our minds, seeking to understand what is being shared and why. In what God has spoken – what is given to us in His Word – we find His appeal is given in love for all. Love is an essential part of His character (1 Jn. 4:8). Therefore we ask, “How well do we listen to Him and value His love?”
The Bible is full of exhortations, warnings and pleadings. God has presented many lessons by providing examples, including stories of individuals. May we listen carefully to what He is telling us and put into practice those things that please Him, to His glory.
