Watching And Working
Blessed are those bondmen whom the lord on coming shall find watching … Blessed is that bondman whom his lord on coming shall find doing thus. —Luke 12:37,43 JND
Twice the Lord Jesus calls His bondman blessed. In Luke 12:37 the blessing for the servant is in connection with watching . Note that here it is not being occupied for Him but watching for Him. It is important that we see this. It is being attached to His person in love. This demonstrates that the affections of the heart are going out to Him. We are waiting for the rejected Son of Man who, prior to His manifestation here on earth, will call His bride away to be with Him forever. This watching is sustained by Him. It is not dependent on world events but on occupation in love for Him who has promised us, “Behold, I come quickly” (Rev. 22:12). He will come and be united with His people, then His bride, forever and ever. There is also the moral aspect. Our waiting ought to be with our loins girded and our lamps burning. We must be free to move and be separated from the defilement of this earth, holding forth the word of life and doing it as men, men who stand in the breach for their master.
The second time the Lord pronounces a blessing on his bondman is in Luke 12:43, and this time is in connection with our doing. It is in relation to being a steward. Faithfulness and spiritual discernment in what the Lord has committed to us is now presented before us. The Lord has entrusted responsibilities to each one of us. As believers go out and follow the Lord in the way of separation from all human disorder, and desire His presence on the way, they have the great responsibility to be good stewards and to work with what the Lord has given them. The blessing related to watching and to doing is therefore of great importance with regard to our testimony and walk here on earth. Firstly, it shows where the heart is when it is engaged in watching, and secondly, it testifies of our work for Him and what energizes us for service. Oh, that the Lord might be able to call many of us blessed because we are watching and working for Him.
