In What Should We Trust?
Trusting In Scripture
Unlike much of what we hear today, what God says is always trustworthy. However, we must be careful not to accept without question all that individuals attribute to God. People are known to “twist” Scripture – the Bible – to make it say what they want it to say (2 Pet. 3:16 ESV ). We can avoid misinterpretation by comparing a passage with other related Scriptures (consider 1 Cor. 2:13). Trusting in a proper interpretation of Scripture is really trusting in God, for it is He who is its Author!
Trusting In God
“God … saves the upright in heart” (Ps. 7:10). He will deliver us from suffering, danger, sickness and the bondage of sin. He will provide for our food, drink, clothing and all other necessary material things. As a result we need not fear. The person who trusts God for everything, including provision for the many troubles of life, will be able to live worry-free. We are told, “Humble yourselves … under the mighty hand of God … casting all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you” (1 Pet. 5:6-7). The writer of Psalm 37:25, having lived a long time, said, “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.” Also, it has been a great comfort throughout the ages to “know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose” (Rom. 8:28). These are the upright in heart.
How Do We Become Upright In Heart?
We do not start out upright! God says of mankind, “They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside: together they have become corrupt, there is none who does good, not even one” (Ps. 14:1-3). We often soften this fact by saying, “Nobody’s perfect.”
However, man wants to be perfect, and God offers us the opportunity to be perfected if we will trust in Him and seek to do His will. The LORD has extended an invitation to you: “Come now, let us reason together … though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool” (Isa. 1:18). The Bible tells us, “The blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 Jn. 1:7-9).
Won’t you put your trust in the Lord Jesus right now? Confess that you are a sinner and acknowledge your need of a Savior. Believe in Him who shed His blood for you on the cross that you may be forgiven. Then follow the Lord, obedient to His desires for you, as found in the Bible. We can tell you how.
