Can Eternal Life Be Lost?

The Bible’s clear answer: No.

“God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
(John 3:16)

God’s Part: Loving and Giving

Our Part: Believing and Having

We are not told to earn eternal life—only to believe in the Son.

If we were writing the way of salvation, it might sound like:
"Do your best, attend worship, pray hard, and maybe you’ll make it."
But God made it far simpler and certain!

Who Has Eternal Life?

Jesus answers clearly:

✔ Hear His word
✔ Believe the One who sent Him
✔ Have everlasting life
✔ Shall not come into judgment
✔ Have passed from death into life
(John 5:24)

No Works Required

We do not work for eternal life. We believe:

“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life.” (John 3:36)

Christ already bore our judgment.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

Eternal Security in Christ

“My sheep hear My voice … I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:27-30)

“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son … that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:10-13)

What About Judas and Warning Scriptures?

Not all who claim to follow Christ are true believers:

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom…” (Matthew 7:21)

Warning passages aim to awaken mere professors who never truly believed (e.g., Hebrews 6:4-6).

Can Christians Sin?

Yes, but they remain God’s children. Disobedient believers experience Fatherly discipline, not loss of salvation:

“For whom the Lord loves He chastens…” (Hebrews 12:6-7)

Sin breaks fellowship, not relationship. Confession restores fellowship and joy.

The Final Word:

Eternal life is truly eternal, not temporary.
Jesus promises:
“Never perish”
“No one can snatch them out of My hand”
