The Lord’s Testing and Love

A Blacksmith Speaks

“The genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
— 1 Peter 1:7

Many years ago, a Christian blacksmith whose life was full of suffering was challenged by an unbeliever to explain why God allowed such hardship in his life. His response was simple yet profound:

“As a blacksmith, I often take a piece of iron and heat it to a white-hot glow. Then I strike it hard on the anvil to test if it can be tempered. If it can, I plunge it into cold water to change its temperature suddenly.
I repeat this process—heating, quenching, hammering, bending, and filing—until the iron is shaped into a useful tool that will last for years.
But if when I first strike it, I see it cannot be tempered, I throw it onto the scrap pile and sell it for pennies.
I believe my God and Father is testing me in the same way—putting me repeatedly through fire and water. I try to bear it patiently, praying, ‘Lord, put me in the fire if You will, or into the water if You think I need it. Do as You please, Lord—only don’t throw me onto the scrap pile.’”

Our life is like the face of a clock, and the hands are God’s hands moving over us. The short hand represents discipline, the long hand represents grace. Slowly and surely, discipline passes, and God speaks through it every hour. But over and over, His hand of grace also moves, showering blessings twelvefold for every stroke of discipline and trial. Both hands are fixed securely to the one unchanging center—the great heart of the God of love.

If you are enduring a hard season of testing, like the blacksmith’s trials, don’t forget God’s grace. Our loving Father says to us as His children what He said to Paul:

“My grace is sufficient for you.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

In this wonderful Father–child relationship, God also says:

“My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
for whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” (Hebrews 12:5-6)

The Lord’s testing is a sign both of His love and His preparing us for usefulness. Scripture teaches it is “for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness,” and that “afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:10-11).

May this be true in your life as well.
