The Real Truth About Jesus Christ
Jesus was born in the humble village of Bethlehem in Israel, lived for about 33 years in Galilee, and ultimately died on a Roman cross. Despite not being wealthy, carrying arms, or writing a book, His influence is immeasurable and continues to be felt around the world today. His impact is both eternal and transformative.
In fact, this Man is so significant that history is divided into two eras: B.C. (Before Christ) and A.D. (Anno Domini, "in the year of our Lord"). Over two thousand years have passed since His birth.
God ensured that His life was carefully documented in the Bible. The Bible, a collection of 66 books, is God’s inspired Word, preserved intact through the centuries. Among these books, four—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—focus on the life of Jesus Christ. Let’s take a closer look at what they say about Him.
According to the Gospel of Luke, the angel Gabriel appeared to the virgin Mary, telling her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” Though troubled by the angel's words, Mary was told that she would conceive and bear a son named Jesus. "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest" (Luke 1:28-32).
Though Mary was unmarried, Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her, and the child born of her would be called the Son of God (Luke 1:35).
Mary was engaged to Joseph, who was initially unaware of the divine conception. When he learned of her pregnancy, he considered breaking off their engagement. However, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, reassuring him: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:18-21).
After Jesus was born, shepherds in the fields were visited by an angel who proclaimed, “I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11). Later, wise men from the east, guided by a star, came to worship the newborn Jesus and offered gifts (Matthew 2:1-12).
There’s also the story of Simeon, a godly man who was promised by God that he would not die before seeing the Messiah. When Simeon saw Jesus, he took Him in his arms, blessed God, and said, “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation” (Luke 2:29-30).
The birth of Jesus was foretold centuries before in the Old Testament. Micah, a prophet, wrote about 700 years before Christ’s birth: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be ruler in Israel” (Micah 5:2).
Isaiah, another prophet, also prophesied, "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). This name, "Immanuel," means “God with us,” and is referenced in Matthew 1:23.
The many Old Testament prophecies about Jesus' coming are miraculous in themselves—who but God can foretell the future so precisely?
