What about TITHING?

Giving under Law

Tithing—the giving of one tenth—was clearly taught in the Old Testament as part of the law of Judaism (Lev. 27:30-32; Dt. 14:22-29).

“Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me!”
—Malachi 3:8

The people of Israel were charged with robbing God because they were not paying their tithes. Their selfishness blocked God’s blessing, but He promised abundant blessings for faithful tithing.

Giving under Grace

But the New Testament ushers in Christianity — where “we are not under law but under grace” (Rom. 6:14).

The Christian principle is not about lawful obligation but about grateful, proportionate giving according to how God has prospered us (1 Cor. 16:2).

Many believers give far more than a tenth—not because they must, but because they want to. God delights in such joyful generosity (2 Cor. 9:7).

Giving Cheerfully

God calls us to give:

  • Cheerfully, not grudgingly
  • Liberally, with a positive heart
  • Purposefully and orderly (1 Cor. 16:1-2)

“God is able to make all grace abound toward you... so that you may have an abundance for every good work.”
—2 Corinthians 9:8-11

The early Christians, even in poverty, gave joyfully and sacrificially (2 Cor. 8:1-5). Jesus said:

“When you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”
—Matthew 6:3

Our giving is a private, humble act of worship, one day to be rewarded openly by God.

Giving Out of Love

Embrace the Lord’s promise:

“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over...”
—Luke 6:38

Christian giving flows not from law but from love—because He first loved us. We give because He has given so much to us!

— G. W. Steidl
